Hazelwood Central High School
The Central High Hawks girls’ basketball team started the season with a 1-8 record before turning their season around by winning 12 of their last 16 games. That included an 8-1 conference record and being crowned 2022-2023 Blue Pool Suburban Conference Champions.
The team, led by freshman guard Camirah Foster, does not have any seniors and includes only two juniors, Trinity Jones and Iyanah Robertson. That inexperience allowed for development within the team, and the progress happened quickly.
“This is the most fun I have had coaching in a long time,” exclaimed William Holloway, Hazelwood Central girls’ basketball head coach. “We were able to get into the gym and transfer the knowledge that the coaching staff and I had. Just seeing them grow, it is like the proud dad moment.”
The Hawks were carried by their 9-game winning streak from the end of January to the middle of February. However, the coaching staff felt they learned the most about their team during the beginning of the season.
“We learned that our girls were determined to get better because they never hung their head after a loss,” Holloway said. “Our girls are resilient; they’re going to fight. They wanted to learn, and it showed by the way that they practiced. We learned that our group is eager and hungry for success.”
HSD wants to congratulate Coach Holloway, being coach of the year and Camirah Foster player of the year. The Hawks girls’ basketball team on their resiliency and on bringing home the conference championship to Central High.
