Fall 2022 Season Summary – Hazelwood West High School

Softball

The Lady Wildcats had a 15-9 record this season including taking 1stplace at the Orchard Farms Tournament. The team suffered some injuries from some key players, but they continued to work together behind the pitching of Kate Mullins ending the season on a 5-game winning streak prior to districts. They had a good showing in the 1st round of districts although they fell short losing 4-6 to Rosati-Kain/St. Joseph. During the season, the team volunteered time at the local pantry showing how important it is to give back to our community. They also represented the Wildcats well by having 4 girls make the green pool all-conference 1stteam (Kate Mullins, Loryn Damico, Aydenn Sutton, Izzy Rogers) and 3 girls make the all-conference 2ndteam (Faith Cozart, Mia Boschen, Kenna Kalka).

Boys Soccer

The boys’ soccer program started a new era under new coach Steve Mayes (who is returning to coaching for the Wildcats) and returning assistant coach Tim Schutzenhofer. The team finished with a 13-11 record and won the Blue Conference Pool. Coach Mayes was named Blue Pool Conference Coach of the year and Wilson Decker was named the Blue Pool – Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, 6 players were name to 1stteam all-conference (Jose Ibarra-Castro, Caleb Burns, Landon Raby, Michael Jefferson, Daniel Awodeyi, and Andre Wynne) and 4 players to 2ndteam all-conference (Eric Pelot, William Singleton, Andre Hatton, and Kaden Pridemore), as well as Sportsmanship Award to William Singleton.

The team continued a 2ndyear “Kicks for Cancer” game against Ritenour. It was a great night and full of fan support. Although the Wildcats lost 0-1 (PKs); this year was extra special as the team donated all the funds to one of our players’ families who is dealing with this difficult disease. Wildcats supporting Wildcats!!!

E-Sports

The wildcats kicked off our 1st season of esports. The Fall leagues led with a varsity and a junior varsity rocket league team. We saw our first ever program win at both levels. We had 2 Overwatch beginner teams. Overwatch Red was wildly successful going undefeated and securing the number 1 seed for the beginner tournament. We made it to the semi-finals of that tournament. Overwatch Black had a decent season considering it’s a mostly freshman group. Running the Career and Technical Education side, we had a very successful foray into Twitch streaming. Reaching the followers needed to become Twitch Affiliate and having students work the broadcast and commentary crews. Students also designed our team’s logo and shirts, which a lot of teachers also bought to support the team. Maryville University’s coach was a special guest, visiting and assisting our team.
